Seth Clearwater // Twilight

how's my driving?
Let me know how I'm doing. anon on, screening on, IP logging off.

As always, I'm hoping to be respectful of Quileute tribal culture and legends,
so I definitely welcome any correction or contribution to my knowledge. I'm
not native, and though I am pretty well-versed in legends and traditions of
some tribes, I am definitely not all-knowing. I'll certainly try to do
my research as best I can for all aspects of Seth's tribal life, but I always
welcome the input of people more knowledgeable than I. Thank you very much!

Seth Clearwater // Twilight

things to know:
These are some fun facts about Seth (and his username, etc) that you might be interested in knowing!

1) The quote in his userinfo is from a Quileute tribal elder, Chris Morganroth III, on the actual origins of the Quileute association with wolves. For more on how I hope to handle the conflict between real Quileute legends and what Stephenie Meyer appropriated for Twilight, see this post.

2) Technically speaking (or at least according to legend), Seth is not actually a werewolf. He'll let people call him that because it's easier to remember than the Quileute word for wolves ("tɫó•kᵂali"), but he'll probably point out at least once that he's not actually a werewolf in the strictest sense of the term. He doesn't only turn at the full moon, and if he bites you, it'll hurt like a bitch but you won't become a wolf.

3) Seth's body temperature always runs hot—as do the temperatures of all the other wolves (you can see this in Eclipse and Breaking Dawn both, when Jacob takes it upon himself to be Bella's space heater). Since there's obviously no real scientific precedent for this, I'm sticking his temp somewhere around 102 or 103 degrees resting.

4) To the best of my understanding, there are very few Quileute teenagers who can actually speak Quileute fluently. Seth, like many others, speaks a few words and can understand a bit, but is by no means fluent in the language—he'll use it when he thinks the Quileute word is more appropriate than the English/Asgardian word, or when there is no translation, but he can't just bust out a whole conversation in Quileute without prompting. That said, he's probably a little ahead of the average Quileute teenager just by virtue of being the son of a tribal elder.

Seth Clearwater // Twilight

Hi! I'm Min, and as you are probably aware, I play Seth Clearwater of Twilight not-so-fame. I just wanted to take a second and make a couple of notes about Seth and the Quileute Nation and how I plan to make the two jive in my RP.

By this point, most people are probably aware that Stephenie Meyer's interpretation of Quileute legends (particularly the wolf legends) are... loose, at best. In a lot of ways, they don't jive with existing Quileute legends that have been passed down through the tribe for generations. And this puts me in the kind of awkward position of having to decide whether I want to be true to the real Quileute traditions, or if I want to play what Stephenie Meyer has written.

The answer is both! I really hope that I can come to a happy medium between the two, and mesh Stephenie Meyer's re-appropriated legends with what the actual Quileute Nation has to say about the culture and legends. I think that Quileute culture (and all native culture) comes from a really rich, complex tradition of storytelling and hospitality and it would be a complete shame to scratch that out in the face of some fictional retellings. Seth is a fictional character, but he's a fictional character who is a member of a real, existing native tribe, and I hope to do as much justice to the real Quileute tribe as I do to the Twilight canon.

That said, I know it won't be perfect. Please, if you see something that you think has been done incorrectly or would like to correct some incorrect knowledge/assumption about Quileute (or native) culture, please feel free to use my HMD to voice your concerns! Anon is on and IP logging is off, but I promise that I won't bite if you crit me.
